THE GREY LINE
Book 2 of Water Runs Red
Dina chose Luke. She never gave him the right to choose for her.
For the first time, she has someone she wants beside her when the work is done. Someone whose touch she reaches for without thinking. Someone she can share a meal with, fall asleep beside, and look for across a crowded room. After everything it took to let him close, she is beginning to believe she can have this life and still belong to herself.
Outside their fragile peace, the road is growing busier. More caravans mean more people depending on pumps, spare parts, and agreements between territories. Every new arrival puts pressure on a system held together by labor and uneasy trust. Wolf packs want guarantees before they open their borders. Travelers want passage without giving a pack a claim on them.
Dina understands that demand better than most. She is trying to build a way through: something a person can carry, use, and surrender without surrendering themselves. It is a practical problem with dangerous implications. On this road, who vouches for you can matter as much as who you are.
And everyone can see who stands beside her.
Luke knows the threats she cannot always read. He knows what his presence tells other Wolves, what his protection is worth, and how much it would cost him to lose her. Now someone else has learned those things, too. They have watched closely enough to find the one pressure he may not be able to withstand.
The routes begin to change. Explanations grow shorter. Decisions reach Dina after they have already been made. The man who once made the road feel safer is keeping something from her, and every attempt to get an answer brings her up against the same quiet certainty: he is handling it.
Behind that silence is an offer that turns her safety into a bargaining piece. Luke believes there are things he can keep from ever touching her. Dina knows what it feels like to discover that other people have been discussing her life as a problem to solve.
Wanting him has never meant giving up her voice. But challenging his protection could expose them both to the people waiting for a weakness—and trusting him now means asking a question neither of them can afford to evade.
Luke would do anything to keep her alive. Dina needs to know whether that includes letting her choose the danger.
The Grey Line is Book Two of Water Runs Red, a post-apocalyptic romance trilogy about desire, divided loyalties, and the cost of protection. Begin Dina and Luke’s story with The Broken Road.
